ROBBINSVILLE — It was a classic example of how you can lose as an individual, but still go a very long way to help win a match for your team.
In the first round of a Colonial Valley Conference quad on Saturday morning, Robbinsville defeated Steinert, 39-38, in a match that found the Ravens holding a 10-point lead with two bouts to go.
The first of those bouts was at 215 where Robbinsville’s Anthony Inverso wrestled smart and ended up dropping a 7-1 regular decision against favored Mikey Odige.
With the victory now secured with a seven-point lead, Robbinsville then forfeited heavyweight to win the match by one point.
Steinert was a big favorite at heavyweight and had that bout been wrestled it’s possible it might have gotten six points anyway. On the other hand, it didn’t matter because by losing a three-point decision, Inverso avoided giving up a major decision that might very well have won the match for Steinert.
Had the match ended up 39-all. Steinert would have won on criteria because Robbinsville forfeited 138.
Making Inverso’s effort even more clutch was the fact he had lost to Odige, 14-2, earlier in the year at the College of New Jersey Tournament.
“It seems like a lot of our matches have started at 106 and every time it came down to Anthony,” said Robbinsville coach Dan Hughes. “And every time he has come through for us. He’s our leader. It seems like he wrestles best when he is doing it for the team.”
It was just the second loss of the year for Steinert (13-2), which was coming off a big win over Hightstown on Wednesday night. Robbinsville, meanwhile, is now 12-6 after also beating Princeton, 71-7, and Trenton, 56-22.
In other results, Steinert beat Princeton, 70-3, and Trenton, 68-7, while Trenton defeated Princeton, 54-23.
The Robbinsville-Steinert match was also a classic example of teams going on runs.
For its part, Robbinsville swept the first five weights to storm out to a quick 28-0 lead. Leading the way was a 23-second pin by Alex Viscido at 113 and a 29-second fall by Lucas Messinger at 126. PIerce Cicero also came through when he used a half to pin in the opening 106-pound bout,
Starting with the forfeit at 138, Steinert answered with a five-bout run of its own. Recording falls for the Spartans were Yasin and Yazid Ahmed, Jackson ClarkeGoss and Marcello Pandolfini.
Pandolfini’s fall at 165 pounds put Steinert ahead, 29-28. Robbinsville then countered with a pin by Tony Migliaccio and a technical fall by Tyler Shane, setting the stage for Inverso’s heroics and the photo finish.
