COLUMBUS — Like every player, Corrin Arnold wants to do better – not only to help her improve, but to help her team grow as well.

The difference between Arnold and other players is that she is a 5-foot-10 senior center with the Bordentown High varsity girls’ basketball team who has already committed to play at Lycoming College next year.

Arnold entered this season knowing a bigger role was going to be asked of her by 18-year head coach Bill Lloyd after the graduation of 1.000-point scoring forward Maddie Wylie.

Like Lloyd and the coaches at Lycoming, Arnold knows she is capable. With a really good ability to track down rebounds, her potential is off the charts.

Everyone could see that when Arnold played the way she did Wednesday at Northern Burlington, where she posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to help the Scotties remain undefeated with a 38-30 win over the Greyhounds.

“My confidence was way higher today than it’s been the rest of the season,” said Arnold, who scored in double figures for a second straight game. “They played us tough. Maybe it was the rivalry or our undefeated (9-0) record. All I know is I didn’t want to look back and say, ‘Oh we lost one,’ even if it was against a team that’s not in our division.”

Northern Burlington (2-9) has been steadily getting better under first-year head coach Dee Briggs and probably surprised the visitors a little after falling behind 11-4 in the game’s first 6:35. A minute later, the Greyhounds drew as close as 11-9.

“This was a good game for us. We showed a lot of heart,” Northern’s 5-foot-8 freshman guard Priscilla Kowalczyk said. “We’ve progressed a lot since the beginning of the season.”

After an 0-6 start, the Greyhounds have begun to find themselves. Like Arnold, they too know they have room for improvement and know they are quite capable as they’ve shown in going 2-3 in their last five games with all of those loss margins in the single digits.

The home team drew as close as 18-17 at halftime with chances to tie the game or take the lead. But after intermission, Northern Burlington’s shots were a little off, allowing Bordentown to go on a 10-0 run.

Arnold had two baskets and four rebounds during that surge, only to see the Greyhounds draw close once again behind the hot shooting of Kowalczyk, who scored six of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter, and fellow frosh Vivien Wasilewski, who scored five of her eight in the final eight minutes.

“I think we should keep shooting no matter what,” Kowalczyk said, thinking back to a tough third quarter that only saw senior guard Shakthi Ramaswamy hit a 10-foot jump shot with 35 seconds left to make it 28-19.

But when Wasilewski hit a 3-point field goal with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter, Northern got within 32-29.

“I was a little scared,” Arnold said. “I didn’t even realize it was so close. Ciara (Knight, a 5-5 senior guard who led B’town with 15 points) and I said, ‘We’ve got to win.’”

With Scotties’ 5-5 freshman guard Addison Dziubak adding four of her eight points down the stretch, including a pair of free throws in the final minute, the visitors were able to hang on and stay unbeaten.

It was a moment of growth that will help Arnold and all of the other players involved in the game keep getting better.
